The Low Emission and Climate Resilient Development (LECRD) Project is working with the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) under key result area 2  to  enhance access to clean energy systems. KIRDI is a national research institute mandated to undertake multidisciplinary research and development in industrial and allied technologies. The Energy Division at the institution is charged with the responsibility of researching, designing and developing energy efficient technologies as well as championing the growth of bio-fuels and renewable energies as alternative sources of energy. KIRDI was supported through the project  in carrying out a national technical and socio economic baseline survey on solar lanterns in the country. The findings showed that while there is wide distribution and use of lanterns in the country, there was a lack of capacity in the repair of lanterns. In this regard, the project supported a meeting to aid in drafting a proposal on maintenance and repair of solar lanterns to be submitted to the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN); which is an operational arm of the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism.

The meeting was held at KEFRI headquarters, Muguga in the month of July 2017 bringing together engineers from KIRDI, technical experts from JKUAT and the Climate Change Directorate. The meeting reviewed the technical and socio economic survey that  was carried out by KIRDI, energy efficiency opportunities in Kenya’s NDC, the CTCN application process, required documents and proposal development templates. The major problem identified was the lack of quality solar lanterns in the country coupled with their short lifespan. The proposal would aim to improve the operational period of the lanterns as well as ensuring they are locally serviceable. The main objective in this regard is to increase the wide use of solar lanterns in Kenya as a renewable energy solution by gearing towards establishing local standards, advancement of local assembly options and building capacity for local installation service and repair of related products and lanterns. More consultative sessions will be held to bring on board key partner institutions like KEBS, KAM, KPLC, MOEP, NEMA among others and firm up on the proposal before submission.
